What to Expect at Your First Muay Thai Class: A Beginner's Guide

Date Published

Walking into a Muay Thai gym for the first time can feel intimidating. You might be wondering if you'll look silly, if you need to be in shape before you start, or if someone is going to punch you in the face on day one. Let's address those fears right now: you're going to be absolutely fine.

At Sabai Muay Thai Kallang, we've designed our beginner program specifically for people who have never stepped onto a mat before. This guide walks you through exactly what will happen from the moment you walk through our doors, so you can show up feeling confident and prepared.

The Anxieties We Hear Most (And Why You Can Let Them Go)

"Will I look silly?"

Everyone in that beginner class started exactly where you are. Our instructors have taught hundreds of first-timers, and they've seen every version of "uncoordinated" you can imagine. Nobody is judging you — we're all focused on our own journey. Plus, we break down every movement into simple, manageable steps so you're never thrown into the deep end.

"Do I need to be fit first?"

Nope. Muay Thai is how you get fit. You don't need to be able to run a marathon or do a push-up. Our classes are designed to meet you at your current fitness level and gradually build from there. The only requirement is a willingness to try.

"Will I get hit?"

Absolutely not in your first class (or your first several classes). Beginner sessions focus entirely on technique, movement, and striking pads — not people. You won't be sparring or doing any contact work with partners until you've built a solid foundation and feel completely ready for it.

From Door to Mat: Your Arrival Experience

10–15 Minutes Before Class: Arrive a bit early to get settled. Wear comfortable athletic clothes — shorts or leggings and a t-shirt work perfectly. Bring a water bottle and a small towel.

Checking In

When you arrive, you'll check in at the front desk. Our team will get you signed in and show you where to store your belongings. If it's your first time, we'll give you a quick tour of the facilities — restrooms, water station, and the training area.

Meeting Your Instructor

Your instructor will introduce themselves and ask if you have any injuries or concerns they should know about. This isn't to embarrass you — it's to make sure you have a safe, positive experience. Let them know if you're nervous! They'll keep an extra eye on you during class.

Hand Wraps and Gloves

We'll provide you with hand wraps and gloves for your first session. Your instructor or a senior student will help you wrap your hands properly — it feels a bit like learning to tie a tie for the first time, but you'll get the hang of it quickly. The wraps protect your wrists and knuckles, and they'll become part of your pre-class ritual.

The Class Structure: What You'll Actually Do

A typical beginner class at Sabai Muay Thai runs for 60 minutes. Here's how that hour breaks down:

1. Warm-Up (10–15 minutes)

We start with dynamic movements to wake up your body — think jumping jacks, light jogging, arm circles, and hip rotations. Nothing extreme, just enough to get your heart rate up and your joints ready for movement. The warm-up also helps shake off any nerves.

2. Technique Demonstration (15–20 minutes)

This is where the learning happens. Your instructor will demonstrate a technique — maybe a basic jab, a roundhouse kick, or a defensive movement. They'll break it down step by step:

  • Foot placement
  • Hip rotation
  • Arm positioning
  • Follow-through

You'll practice the movement in the air first (we call this "shadow work") while the instructor watches and gives feedback. Expect lots of gentle corrections — this is how you improve.

3. Pad Work (15–20 minutes)

This is the fun part. You'll pair up with a partner and take turns holding pads for each other. One person holds the pads while the other practices the techniques you just learned. Don't worry — we teach you how to hold pads correctly, and your instructor will be circulating to help everyone.

There's something incredibly satisfying about hearing that thwack when your shin or fist connects cleanly with the pad. It's also a great workout — expect your heart rate to climb here.

4. Conditioning and Cool-Down (10–15 minutes)

The final segment focuses on bodyweight exercises — push-ups, squats, planks, and core work. These build the strength that supports your techniques. Don't worry if you can't do a full push-up yet; we'll show you modifications.

We finish with stretching and breathing exercises to bring your heart rate down and help prevent soreness. You'll leave feeling accomplished, not destroyed.

Equipment You'll Use

For your first class, we provide everything you need:

Equipment What It's For
Hand Wraps Protect your wrists and knuckles; provide stability when striking
Boxing Gloves Cushion your hands and protect your training partner when holding pads
Thai Pads Large pads held by partners for practicing kicks, knees, and punches
Focus Mitts Smaller handheld targets for precision striking drills

After Your First Class

When class ends, you'll probably feel a mix of tiredness and exhilaration. That's normal! Here's what to expect:

  • Mild soreness — especially in your shoulders, hips, and calves. These are muscles you don't use in everyday life.
  • A sense of accomplishment — you showed up and tried something new. That's worth celebrating.
  • Questions — you'll probably have them! Our instructors are happy to chat after class.

Many beginners tell us they were nervous walking in but left feeling welcomed and excited to return. That's exactly the experience we've built our beginner program to deliver.

Ready to Take the First Step?

Your first Muay Thai class is just an hour of your time — but it could be the start of something transformative. Whether you're looking to get fit, build confidence, or simply try something new, we're here to make that first step as welcoming as possible.

"The hardest part of Muay Thai is walking through the door. Everything after that is just showing up."

We can't wait to meet you on the mats.
