What to Wear to Your First Muay Thai Class: A Beginner's Checklist

Date Published

Walking into a Muay Thai gym for the first time can feel intimidating—especially when you're unsure what to wear. The good news? You don't need fancy gear or expensive equipment to get started. At Sabai Muay Thai Kallang, we welcome complete beginners with open arms (and extra hand wraps).

This practical checklist covers everything you need to know about dressing for your first class, from the right clothing to what you can leave at home.

What to Wear: Clothing Essentials

Comfort and mobility are key. You'll be moving, stretching, and sweating—so dress like you're heading to a challenging workout session.

Shirts: Keep It Light and Breathable

  • T-shirts or tank tops made from moisture-wicking fabric work best. Cotton absorbs sweat and gets heavy—synthetic blends or dri-fit materials are ideal.
  • Avoid oversized shirts that might get in the way during drills. A fitted (but not tight) shirt stays put when you're moving.
  • Bring a spare shirt for after class— you'll thank yourself later.

Bottoms: Shorts or Leggings?

You don't need traditional Muay Thai shorts for your first class—though many beginners fall in love with them and get a pair after a few sessions. For now, any of these work perfectly:

  • Athletic shorts above the knee—this allows full range of motion for kicks and knees
  • Compression shorts or leggings—comfortable and stay in place during movement
  • Training tights under shorts if you prefer more coverage

Avoid: Jeans, cargo shorts, loose basketball shorts (they shift around), or anything with zippers or buttons that could scratch training partners.

Footwear: Barefoot on the Mats

Here's one thing you can leave at home—shoes. Muay Thai training is done barefoot on the mats. This improves balance, grip, and the precision of your technique.

What about socks? Regular socks are too slippery. If you're uncomfortable going barefoot, bring a pair of grip socks or MMA-style grappling socks. But honestly? Most beginners are surprised how natural it feels after the first few minutes.

Do bring: A clean pair of flip-flops or slides to wear when you're off the mats (walking to the bathroom, grabbing water). This keeps the training area clean and hygienic.

Hair, Jewelry & Small Details

These small details make a big difference for safety and comfort.

Item What to Do
Long hair Tie it back securely—braids, ponytails, or buns work best. Bring extra hair ties just in case.
Jewelry Remove all rings, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. It's for your safety and your training partners'.
Watches & fitness trackers Best to leave them in your bag. They can scratch others or get damaged during pad work.
Fingernails & toenails Keep them short and trimmed. Long nails can accidentally scratch during clinch or partner drills.

What We Provide vs. What You Bring

At Sabai Muay Thai Kallang, we've designed our beginner classes to be completely accessible—no equipment purchase necessary to start.

We Provide (Free for Beginners)

  • Boxing gloves — We have plenty of sizes available for beginners to borrow
  • Hand wraps — Essential for wrist support and knuckle protection
  • Shin guards — For when you start practicing kicks (usually from week 2-3)
  • Water — Hydration station available, but bring your own bottle

You Should Bring

  • Water bottle — You'll sweat more than you expect. A 750ml+ bottle is ideal.
  • Small towel — For wiping down between rounds
  • Change of clothes — Trust us on this one
  • Bag for wet clothes — A simple plastic bag works

Common Beginner Questions

"Do I need to buy gloves before my first class?"

Absolutely not. We provide gloves for all beginners. Once you've trained for a few weeks and know you're sticking with it, then consider buying your own pair. A good starter set costs around $40-60 SGD. We can recommend brands when you're ready.

"Should I wear Muay Thai shorts?"

Only if you want to! Many beginners start in regular gym shorts. Traditional Muay Thai shorts are shorter and have a wide leg opening that allows for higher kicks without restriction. They're fun to wear and help you get into the spirit, but they're not required for your first class.

"What if I'm not in shape yet?"

That's exactly why you're coming! Wear whatever you're comfortable moving in. Our beginner classes are designed for all fitness levels. You'll build strength and conditioning as you train—no prerequisite fitness required.

"Can I train if I have long nails/acrylics?"

For safety, we ask that you trim nails short. Long or acrylic nails can break during training or accidentally scratch partners during drills. It's one of those small adjustments that keeps everyone safe on the mats.

"The most important thing you can bring to your first class is an open mind. Everything else—we've got you covered."
