Walking into your first Muay Thai class can feel exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time. The good news? You don't need to be a seasoned fighter—or even particularly fit—to get started. But showing up prepared helps you focus on learning instead of worrying about forgotten essentials.
This checklist covers everything you need to bring, what to skip, and what we already have waiting for you at our Kallang gym.
Required Items: The Non-Negotiables
These three items are essential for every trial class. Forget one, and you'll spend more time managing discomfort than enjoying the session.
1. A Large Water Bottle
Muay Thai is a full-body workout. Even beginner classes involve jumping, kicking, and striking combinations that raise your heart rate quickly. Bring at least 750ml of water—more if you tend to sweat heavily. We have water dispensers at the gym, but having your own bottle means fewer interruptions during short breaks.
2. A Small Towel
Expect to sweat. A small hand towel or gym towel keeps you comfortable and shows consideration for training partners. You don't need anything fancy—a simple microfiber towel from any sports store works perfectly.
3. Appropriate Training Clothes
Comfort and mobility matter more than style. Here's what works:
- Top: Moisture-wicking t-shirt or tank top. Avoid cotton—it gets heavy and uncomfortable when soaked.
- Bottoms: Athletic shorts (above the knee) or fitted leggings. Shorts with stretch panels are ideal for high kicks.
- Footwear: Barefoot training for Muay Thai. Clean, dry feet are all you need.
Avoid loose clothing that might catch or ride up during movements. If you're unsure, fitted athletic wear from any sports brand works perfectly for your first session.
Optional Items: Nice to Have
These items aren't required, but many beginners appreciate having them:
A Light Snack for After Class
Your first session will burn more energy than you expect. A banana, energy bar, or small protein snack helps stabilize your blood sugar on the way home. Don't eat a heavy meal right before class—light fuel about 90 minutes prior works best.
A Change of Clothes
You'll want to change out of sweaty clothes before heading home or to work. Pack a fresh shirt and bottoms in a small bag. Most people also bring a plastic bag to store damp gear separately.
Personal Toiletries
If you plan to shower after class, bring travel-sized shampoo, body wash, and a spare towel for drying off. Deodorant is always appreciated—both before and after training.
Hair Ties or Headband
Long hair should be secured away from your face. Sweaty strands sticking to your eyes mid-kick are surprisingly distracting.
What NOT to Bring: Leave These at Home
Some items create safety hazards or inconvenience during training. Here's what stays in your locker—or better yet, at home:
Jewelry and Accessories
Rings, necklaces, bracelets, and watches can scratch training partners, catch on equipment, or injure you during striking. Remove everything before class starts. If you have piercings that can't be removed, cover them with athletic tape or consider rescheduling until they can be safely taken out.
Heavy Makeup
Sweat and foundation don't mix well. More importantly, makeup can transfer onto heavy bags, pads, or training partners during partner drills. Come fresh-faced or with minimal product—your skin will thank you too.
Strong Perfumes or Colognes
Scent sensitivity is common in enclosed training spaces. Heavy fragrances can trigger headaches or discomfort for others working nearby. Clean skin and deodorant are plenty.
Your Own Gloves (for the First Class)
If you already own Muay Thai gloves, great—but don't rush out to buy a pair before your trial. We provide clean, well-maintained gloves for all beginners. Try the sport first, then invest in your own gear if you decide to continue.
What the Gym Provides: We've Got You Covered
One of the biggest worries first-timers have is equipment. Here's exactly what we supply so you can show up empty-handed (well, almost):
| Item | What You Get |
|---|---|
| Boxing Gloves | Clean, sanitized gloves in various sizes (8oz–16oz) available for all trial students |
| Hand Wraps | Basic cotton wraps provided; instructors teach you how to wrap properly |
| Training Space | Fully matted floor, heavy bags, and all necessary training equipment |
| Water | Water dispenser for refills (bring your own bottle) |
The "Hidden" Concerns: Lockers, Showers & More
Newcomers often wonder about logistics that aren't obvious from the outside. Here's what you need to know:
Lockers and Storage
We provide lockers for your valuables during class. Bring a small padlock if you have one, or lockers without locks are available for shoes and outer layers. Phones, wallets, and keys should always be stored securely—pockets aren't reliable when you're kicking and moving.
Showers and Changing Facilities
Yes, we have clean shower facilities and changing rooms. Many students come straight from work and shower before heading home. The changing area has basic amenities, but bring your own towel and toiletries if you plan to freshen up post-class.
Arrival Time
Arrive 10–15 minutes before your scheduled class. This gives you time to check in, store your belongings, meet your instructor, and get oriented without rushing. First-day nerves are normal—extra time helps you settle in.
What to Expect During Class
Trial classes follow the same structure as regular sessions but with extra attention for newcomers. You'll warm up, learn basic stance and movement, practice simple strikes on pads or bags, and cool down with stretching. No one expects you to know anything—questions are encouraged, and our instructors specialize in making beginners feel comfortable.
"The hardest part of starting Muay Thai isn't the workout—it's walking through the door for the first time. Once you're here, we've got everything else handled."
